This is the article we submitted for the May edition of the Hayling Islander. The published article was subject to editing by the Islander.

Join our social ride on Friday 10th May

Please join me and the rest of the Cycle Hayling committee for a friendly evening ride.

We’ll start at 6pm at the Creek Road car park, and cycle gently along the sea front to the Ferry Boat Inn, with a detour via the Saltmarsh Lane footpath that we are working to upgrade to cycling.

At the Ferry Boat, we’ll have a well-earned drink (optional), and discuss what’s happening – or not – to improve cycling facilities on Hayling Island.

Don’t forget lights in case you end up cycling after sunset.

Click here for more details and here for some pictures from the last ride.

Bike Week is 8-16 June!

Talking of bike rides, Cycling UK’s Bike Week runs events all over the country –see cyclinguk.org/bikeweek. We‘re even thinking of organising one on Hayling – what do you think?

But you don’t need an event to join in. #7DaysofCycling is another way to celebrate Bike Week. Just get out and enjoy a cycling activity seven times in June, then (if you want), share a photo, video or story about your experience on Instagram or Twitter, using #7DaysofCycling.

There are no rules on what counts as one of your seven – from riding to work, cycling to the shops, to giving your bike a spring clean to a pootle around a park with your mates.

Or go on a Portsmouth CTC trial ride!

If your bike hasn’t been used for a while…

… you can check it out with the Bikeability ABCD checklist:

  • Air in tyres
  • Brakes working, Bars straight & tight
  • Chain oiled, gears working
  • Dangerous Dangly bits secured

Or pop it in to the bike shop. It’ll save you a fortune in fuel, bus fares or gym fees.

And getting fit could save your life.

Need help getting started?

We’ve updated the Cycle Hayling website, cyclehayling.org under the ‘Get cycling’ menu to include more about how to choose the type of bike to buy.
