We have commissioned and installed three map sign boards, one at each end of the Billy Trail, and another one to catch visitors coming off the Hayling Ferry from Portsmouth.
The signs are to :
- Give a warm Hayling welcome to cyclists
- Show a blown up version of our cycle map, with some suggested cycle routes around the island
- Encourage cyclists to find alternatives to the very busy main road
- Highlight commonly requested facilities – such as places to eat – on the island
The first three signs were installed with funding from Hampshire County Council, the land owner for the Billy Trail, with additional support from Havant Borough Council.
We have had great feedback, and it is clear that many people are finding them useful, both visitors and locals, cyclists and non-cyclists. This has encouraged us to identify a number of other locations where similar signs might be worth considering, if the appropriate land-owners agree, and if we can get funding. For example, at Beachlands, Eastoke Corner, and various Holiday Villages, where visitors can already hire bikes.
The actual signs are printed on special aluminium dibond, to make them last, so cost towards £100 each, plus another £100 – £150 for poles, mountings, concrete and labour. If you would like to suggest a new location, or help in any way, please contact Wilf Forrow, at firstname.lastname@example.org
